What You See In The Mirror

You gotta love social media these days, particularly with all the funny memes. So i saw this picture on Facebook the other day and oh my... didn't it just make my day. What a wow! What a Yesses! What a habashwe!! i thought to myself, this is something every woman should hear. Unfortunately not a lot of us will ever hear someone say these words to us or about us. so are we doomed then? Heck no! tell yourself these words! I know we were taught, culturally, that "motho o motle ha a boleloa ke batho". but i actually feel like every woman should have a framed picture of these words on their wall or wherever visible for them to see all the time. Because we need to look at ourselves and say - what a hey wena! What a jealous Down!
Here are my reasons why...the world is full of disappointments that strip women of their worth daily. Some women have been told they are ugly all their life and that is the only thing they see of themselves. Some were born beautiful but people have always highlighted their flaws so much to overshadow their beauty. Some women have lost their self-esteem due to an abusive relationship, a failed marriage and failure to meet society's expectations.
Often, we meet people who want to remind us what we lack, why we can't do certain things...we may be beautiful but have huge curves or a big nose..."how can she advice young girls when her past is not so clean....she thinks she is beautiful...she thinks she is all that...we know a better singer...she is doing this for the fame...that car was bought by her boyfriend, she got all that through a loan..." Cant you let us be people!!!!! Sadly, most of the hate comes from other women, the pull her down syndrome. Can't I shine without dimming your light? Can't we all shine in our own lanes?
on the other end, there are women who dim their own light, because they are afraid to shine or simply because they do not know how to. They become their own worst enemies, creating barriers in their own minds and so bearing the fruits in their lives. The bible mentions that "as a man thinks in his heart, so is he" So what do you think and say about yourself?
You are a woman, maybe delicate in your physique but never weak. You are emotional but equally strong. You are special in your own way, phenomenally. In the words of Loretta A. Cella "A phenomenal woman has imperfections. She is phenomenal for what she does with her imperfections; she is phenomenal because she is true to herself"
Maya Angelou put it perfectly:
Men themselves have wondered...What they see in me.
They try so much...But they can’t touch my inner mystery.
When I try to show them, they say they still can’t see.
I say, It’s in the arch of my back... The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts, The grace of my style.
I’m a woman...Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Yes there is a thin line between a big head and humility but i am talking to the phenomenal woman who is genuine and true. So the next time you look at yourself in the mirror, tell yourself What a wow, What a fire, What a jealous down! Because life is too short to limit yourself, especially by men's standards. You can be and do anything under the sun...even the sky is not the limit! But importantly, remember, there is only one you!
Habashwe!!!!
